Marc Guehi’s future has been a massive talking point for almost a year now. The English international was on the verge of joining Liverpool in last summer’s transfer window. However, the deal collapsed in the final stages on transfer deadline day.
While Crystal Palace managed to keep hold of the Englishman last summer, they could end up sanctioning his departure in the ongoing transfer window. According to Mick Brown via Football Insider, the Eagles might be tempted to accept a big offer from Manchester City for their 25-year-old defensive mainstay.
While things did not work out for Marc Guehi at Chelsea, the move to Crystal Palace in the summer of 2021 completely changed the trajectory of his career. Not only has the 25-year-old established himself as one of their mainstays, but he is also widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
Guehi played a massive part in Crystal Palace’s recent FA Cup and Community Shield triumph. With just a year left on his deal, Liverpool were ready to secure his services in last summer’s transfer window. They had everything in place to get a deal over the line.
However, Oliver Glasner intervened at the last stage and blocked the move. While Marc Guehi ended up staying at the club, his contract runs out in six months, and he looks set to leave them as a free agent amidst interest from multiple top clubs.
Liverpool retain interest in him and are patiently waiting to secure his services on a free transfer next summer. The Reds consider him an ideal long-term replacement for their skipper Virgil van Dijk, who is in the final phase of his career.
However, it seems Manchester City are looking to snatch Marc Guehi from Liverpool’s jaws. Following injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias, Pep Guardiola is forced to look for a new centre-back in the ongoing transfer window. They are looking to secure the services of the English international and seem willing to fork out a big fee to get a deal over the line.
While speaking about Guehi’s situation, Brown said, “Yeah, if the price is right, Palace could end up selling Marc Guehi before the window closes.
“We all know that they’re going to lose out if nothing happens in this transfer window, Guehi will walk out on a free transfer and have his pick of clubs in the summer.
“Every player has got his price, Palace did very well to hang onto him in the summer when they turned down that late move to Liverpool on deadline day.
“We know Oliver Glasner is determined to keep hold of Guehi, he’s such a key man for him, he’s the club captain as well.
“Crystal Palace have resigned themselves to that [letting Guehi leave for free] as well that they are happy to keep him and let him walk out on a free as well.
“So unless City do come up with a big big offer which is too good to turn down, I don’t think Palace will be in any rush to let him go.”
While Glasner has no intentions of parting ways with Guehi mid-season, the board will seriously consider cashing in on him if they receive a significant fee, as he is set to leave for free in six months.
Crystal Palace won’t mind letting the 25-year-old English international run down his deal, so City will have to make a massive offer to tempt them into selling their best player mid-season.
