Lionel Messi broke down in tears as he bid farewell to Argentina fans in his final competitive home game.
The superstar scored twice in a 3-0 win over Venezuela at a sold-out Estadio Mas Monumental in Buenos Aires, before hinting that he may retire before the next World Cup.
Now 38, Messi described the game as “very, very special.” He cried as fans chanted his name during the warm-ups, with his family watching proudly from the stands. He walked out for the anthems alongside his three sons Thiago, Mateo, and Ciro.
Messi told reporters: “As I said before, most likely I won’t play another World Cup because of my age. But if my body allows me, I will try. I’m excited and motivated.”
