On July 7, 2026, Bank Respublika Arena in Masazyr will witness a monumental chapter in Azerbaijani football. After capturing their first-ever domestic league title and cup double, Sabah FK will mark their debut appearance in Europe’s premier club competition, hosting seasoned Welsh champions The New Saints (TNS) in the first leg of the Champions League first qualifying round.
This fixture marks Sabah FK’s historic debut in UEFA Champions League qualification.
TNS showcased incredible domestic firepower, netting 82 goals in 32 Welsh Cymru Premier matches last term.
Both teams found the back of the net in all six of Sabah's pre-season games, and in four of TNS's last five outings.
Under the tactical guidance of Valdas Dambrauskas, the Owls enjoyed a rapid rise last season, finishing a commanding nine points clear of long-standing powerhouse Qarabag. While their summer friendlies lacked a victory, respectable 1-1 draws against European regulars Universitatea Craiova and Ferencváros proved they can compete at this level.
Crucially, Sabah managed to keep their core intact—retaining Pokatilov, Mikelis, Simic, and Lepinica—while securing notable reinforcements. Summer signings like South African defender Aden McCarthy (ex-Kaizer Chiefs), Junior Almeida, Rodrigo Fernandes, Younes Lachaab, and Xander Severina are all pushing for competitive debuts in front of a sold-out Masazyr crowd.
Craig Harrison’s TNS side travels to Azerbaijan as record 18-time Welsh champions, securing their fourth consecutive league title by a mammoth 22 points. However, translating their domestic scoring sprees into Europe has historically proven difficult. Their pre-season has yielded mixed results, concluding with a narrow 1-2 defeat against Bangor.
Key offensive figures Jordan Williams and Ryan Brobbel remain the main threats for the Saints, alongside newly acquired midfielder Rhys Hughes, who registered a stellar 15 goals and 12 assists for Connah's Quay last year. Despite their pedigree, breaking down a compact Azerbaijani defensive block away from home will be a daunting task for Harrison's men.
Sabah enter their landmark European night with immense home support and targeted tactical upgrades.
Although TNS boasts far greater continental experience, the technical quality of the Azerbaijani champions gives them the edge.
Expect a calculated, high-intensity performance from the hosts, who are heavily tipped by global sports analysis data to dictate the tempo without allowing the game to turn into an uncontrollable goal-fest.
Match Prediction: Sabah FK Win & Total Under 4.5 goals
