The 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals feature a heavyweight rematch as France take on Morocco on July 9 at Gillette Stadium in Boston. Four years after their epic semifinal showdown, Didier Deschamps’ side are chasing a third consecutive World Cup final appearance, while Morocco stand on the brink of another historic top-four finish.
France have been dynamic in North America, netting three or more goals in four consecutive matches. However, their Round of 16 clash against Paraguay exposed a potential weakness against low-block defenses. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Les Bleus needed a Kylian Mbappé penalty to secure a 1-0 win.
Personnel-wise, France look settled. Deschamps has found his ideal starting XI, with the lethal attacking trio of Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé, and Kylian Mbappé combining for 11 goals and nine assists so far in the tournament.
Morocco cruised through the group stage, but their knockout campaign has tested their resolve. They dramatically equalized in the 91st minute against the Netherlands before winning on penalties, and overcame a sluggish start against Canada to secure a 3-0 victory through set-pieces and clinical counter-attacks.
Injuries remain the primary concern for the Atlas Lions. Key midfielder Ismael Saibari is sidelined, with Sofiane Rahimi expected to start in his place. Defender Chadi Riad is also ruled out, leaving Redouane Halhal to deputize in central defense once again.
Kylian Mbappé has scored 19 World Cup goals in his career, including 11 in knockout matches.
France have conceded just two goals at the 2026 World Cup, holding a 249-minute shutout streak.
Morocco are currently on a 33-match unbeaten streak and have conceded only four goals in this tournament.
Both sides boast elite defensive records entering this quarterfinal.
While France have superior squad depth and individual quality to unlock tight games, Morocco's tactical structure makes them dangerous on the break.
However, key absences for Morocco tip the scales in favor of Deschamps’ side.
